Vietnam’s Mobile Phone Export Surge in 2025: A Data-Driven Deep Dive

Vietnam’s rise in the global smartphone industry didn’t happen overnight. Over the past decade, the country has steadily evolved from a cost-efficient assembly base into one of the world’s most critical mobile phone export centers. By 2026, that evolution will be clearly reflected in customs data.

According to the latest trade figures & Vietnam customs export data of mobile phones under HS Code 8517, Vietnam exported 128.39 million mobile phones in 2025, generating $33.45 billion in export revenue. That makes mobile phones and components the single largest export category in the country’s trade portfolio.

Today, Vietnam stands among the top three global exporters of smartphones by value, competing alongside China and India. But what makes Vietnam’s position unique is not just scale. It is the combination of concentrated brand manufacturing, high-volume efficiency, and expanding integration into global electronics supply chains. Let’s explore the Vietnam mobile phone export data for 2025 in detail.

The Scale of Vietnam’s Mobile Phone Export Sector

To understand the weight of mobile phones in Vietnam’s economy, consider this:

  • Phones account for roughly 15–18% of the country’s total merchandise exports.
  • Within electronics exports, the share exceeds 30%.
  • A significant portion of foreign-invested enterprise (FDI) exports comes from this single category.

In practical terms, nearly one in every five export dollars Vietnam earns comes from mobile devices and related components. Few countries are this heavily specialized in a single technology segment.

The 128.39 million units exported in 2025 confirm that Vietnam is not merely shipping high-end flagship devices. It is producing smartphones across price tiers, from entry-level handsets for emerging markets to premium flagship and foldable devices for developed economies.

A Highly Concentrated Brand Structure

Vietnam’s mobile phone exports are dominated by one major player: Samsung Electronics. In 2025 alone, Samsung accounted for approximately $30.06 billion in exports, representing close to 90% of the total mobile phone export value. In volume terms, the company shipped more than 116 million units from Vietnam-based factories.

The company’s large-scale production complexes in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen have turned Vietnam into Samsung’s primary global smartphone manufacturing base. In some production cycles, more than half of Samsung’s worldwide smartphone output has originated from Vietnam. Vietnam’s phone export economy is brand-concentrated, yet globally diversified in its end markets.

Other brands also contribute, though on a much smaller scale:

  • Google exported roughly $2.99 billion worth of devices, reflecting Vietnam’s expanding role in Pixel manufacturing.
  • Apple Inc. had a comparatively limited export presence, indicating selective assembly rather than full-scale production.
  • Carrier-branded devices tied to companies such as T-Mobile and AT&T contributed smaller but consistent shipment volumes.

Premium Value vs. Mass Volume

Vietnam Export data shows an interesting contrast between revenue leaders and shipment leaders. On the value side, flagship models such as Samsung’s Galaxy S series and foldable devices generate billions of dollars annually. A single premium model can contribute several billion dollars in export value.

However, in volume terms, mid-range models dominate. Affordable A-series devices account for tens of millions of units shipped, especially to high-demand regions. This dual structure, high-value premium phones alongside high-volume mid-range devices, is what keeps Vietnam’s export figures both large and stable.

Where the Phones Go: Vietnam Phone Exports by Country

Vietnamese-assembled smartphones reach virtually every major consumer market. The leading destination in 2025 was the United States, which absorbed nearly $9.55 billion worth of devices and approximately 32.94 million units.

Other major markets include:

  • The United Arab Emirates, which serves as a regional redistribution hub.
  • Japan and South Korea, reflecting strong regional trade ties.
  • Several European markets, including the United Kingdom and Austria.

The FDI Engine Behind the Boom

Vietnam’s smartphone exports are overwhelmingly driven by foreign direct investment. More than 70% of the country’s total export value comes from FDI enterprises, and in electronics, the share is even higher.

Beyond Samsung, suppliers such as Foxconn, Luxshare, and Pegatron have strengthened Vietnam’s supplier ecosystem. While much of the high-end chip and display manufacturing still occurs abroad, Vietnam’s domestic contribution, including assembly, testing, casing production, and packaging, continues to expand. Current estimates suggest domestic value capture ranges between 20% and 35%, depending on product complexity.

Competitive Positioning: Vietnam vs. India and China

China remains the most comprehensive electronics manufacturing ecosystem globally. India, backed by aggressive production incentives, is rapidly expanding smartphone assembly.

Vietnam’s competitive advantages lie in:

  • Political and regulatory stability
  • Broad trade agreement coverage (including CPTPP and EVFTA)
  • Established production clusters
  • Geographic proximity to China’s component supply base

However, risks remain. Heavy reliance on one dominant brand makes export performance sensitive to corporate strategy shifts.

Conclusion & Looking Ahead

With $33.45 billion in exports and more than 128 million units shipped in 2025, Vietnam has firmly established itself as a core node in the global smartphone supply chain. If replacement cycles accelerate due to AI-enabled devices and foldable innovation, export value could rise further, even if shipment volumes level off.

Vietnam’s mobile phone export expansion is not accidental. It reflects years of policy alignment, infrastructure investment, and integration into multinational supply chains. Vietnam is no longer a backup manufacturing option. It is central to how smartphones reach global markets. And the trade data leaves little room for doubt.
