SILENT BETRAYAL
CJ Hospital was bustling with friends, colleagues, and relatives who had gathered to celebrate. The news of Bamidele giving birth to twins had spread like wildfire, bringing joy to everyone. She and her husband rejoiced, overwhelmed with gratitude after nearly three years of marriage, their prayers had finally been answered. Well-wishers sent money, sháred drinks, and joined in the joyous celebration.
But behind the scenes, Bamidele’s elder sister, Itoro, seethed with frustration. Life had favored Bamidele, and Itoro couldn’t stand it. She was a witch; one who had done everything in her power to bring her sister down. Yet, Bamidele somehow triumphed, and that only fueled Itoro’s resentment even more.
Itoro was just a barren illiterate Young woman in her late 30(s) news had it that her husband divorced her due to reason unknown. She never took her school serious during her youths unlike her elder sister that performed excellent which even paved way for so many opportunities for bamidele to become who she had became but because Itoro couldn't get the kind of easy and loving life her younger sister was getting she grew angrier and jealous.
"How can this girl give birth before me? A girl I am older than by over five years? A girl who was practically born yesterday? And you expect me to sit back and be happy, watching her with her children while I remain here, struggling with my life?" Itoro seethed inwardly with envy.
"Mark my words—this marriage of yours will not last. These two children you just gave birth to... You will lose them. This is only the beginning. No worry hand go soon touch you." She muttered these venomous words under her breath, fórcing a smile as she watched Bamidele rejoice, cradling and brèastfeeding her newborn twins on the hospital bed.
When her share of the drinks was handed to her, she refused to take it, assuring them she was fine. Everyone else drank theirs without suspicion, unaware of Itoro’s hidden intentions. She stared at the children one last time, wished her sister well and left.
That night, Itoro was ready. She and her sister were all in edo state but different locations. Itoro wrapped in her dark robe and moved quietly through the night, clutching her spiritual rope, small torch and other sacred items in her small sack. The abandoned farm lay ahead, shrouded in silence except for the steady hum of crickets and the occasional rustling in the bushes. But fear did not grip her—this was a path she had walked many times before.
There was a green snáke she mistakenly stepped on. But the snake didn't answer her. It only crawled back inside the shrubs and Itoro continued her journey. She made her way inside, to the familiar spot where two slender rubber trees stood, their walls were marked with melted candle wax and the faded stains of dried animal blóods. That was her place of transformation.
She slîpped out of her clothes and gathered some dry sticks with her small torch, striking her match to ignite a small fire. Into the flames, she tossed alligator pepper and a few old photographs of her elder sister, watching as they curled into ash. The fire grew, casting flickering shadows around her.
With practiced hands, she tied the spiritual rope tightly between the two trees, her lips was moving in a hushed tone. Then, crouching beneath the rope, she yelled the name of their coven leader three times. The moment she crossed under the rope, her body vanished into thin air.
SILENT BETRAYAL.
