In a move to enhance local governance and community development, Hon. Terseer Ugbor, the Member representing Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has proposed the establishment of Kwande East Local Government Council, with its headquarters in Jato-Aka. This initiative includes renaming the existing Kwande Local Government to Kwande West Local Government.

As the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Hon. Ugbor has expressed confidence in the proposal’s success at the National Assembly. He has proactively sent letters and memoranda to the two Benue State House of Assembly members representing Kwande Local Government, urging them to initiate proceedings at the State Assembly to obtain the necessary constitutional endorsement for creating the new local governments.

Additionally, Hon. Ugbor has communicated with the Chairman of Kwande Local Government, informing him of these developments and encouraging his active participation in the process. He emphasized the importance of the Council Chairman’s recommendations to facilitate this significant achievement, noting that Kwande Local Government has long been due for division into two distinct councils.

The lawmaker has called on constituents of Kwande Local Government to prepare for their involvement in a forthcoming referendum and public hearing to be conducted by the constitutional review committee. This platform will allow various stakeholders to engage in discussions aimed at realizing this noble goal.

Hon. Ugbor reassured his constituents that the division of the local government would enhance democratic participation, enabling the government to respond more swiftly to issues affecting the populace and ensuring that the benefits of governance reach the grassroots more efficiently. He also highlighted that the creation of the new local government would bolster community-level security, as officials would be better positioned to address the immediate needs of their communities.

This proposal aligns with Hon. Ugbor’s ongoing efforts to foster development in his constituency. Notably, he has previously advocated for the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic, Adikpo, emphasizing the need to address educational disparities in Benue State and unlock the potential of the youth.

The proposed creation of Kwande East and Kwande West Local Government Councils marks a significant step toward improving local governance, promoting community development, and enhancing the overall well-being of the residents in the Kwande region.
